Educational Visit to the University of Malawi Enhances Entomology Learning for Public Health Students

On 26th September 2025, the Public Health Department of St. Joseph’s College of Health Sciences conducted an educational visit to the University of Malawi, Chancellor College. The visit formed part of the Entomology course requirements and was aimed at strengthening student understanding of insects of medical importance through both theoretical and practical sessions.

A total of 47 Public Health students participated in the visit, accompanied by Mr. Chancy Yiwombe, Head of Department for Public Health, Mr. Brian Kapito, Public Health Course Coordinator, Mr. Richard Kamalizeni, Part-time Lecturer in Public Health, and Miss Shila Khalid, Lecturer in the Pharmacy Department.

At the University of Malawi, the sessions were facilitated by Mr. Bob Chinzime and Miss Annie Kondwani, both Laboratory Technicians. The program was structured into three hours of theory followed by practical demonstrations. During these sessions, students were introduced to the identification and classification of insects, including the principles of taxonomy and hands-on examination of specimens. They also received training in the collection and preservation of insects, exploring various tools, techniques, and methods for both short- and long-term preservation. In addition, the sessions addressed control and prevention of insects of medical importance, with discussions focusing on vector-borne diseases and practical public health interventions.

The visit provided students with invaluable hands-on exposure to entomological practices, complementing classroom-based learning. Through this experience, they gained a deeper understanding of the relationship between insects and disease transmission, as well as the critical role entomology plays in public health practice.

St. Joseph’s College of Health Sciences extends special thanks to Miss U. Phoya, Head of Academics and currently Acting Principal, for her leadership and support in ensuring the success of this educational visit. Her dedication to academic excellence continues to inspire both staff and students.

Furthermore, the visit fostered stronger academic collaboration between St. Joseph’s College of Health Sciences and the University of Malawi, contributing significantly to the enrichment of student learning experiences
